United Way believes people shouldn’t have to choose between food and menstrual hygiene products. That’s why United Way’s Labour United and GenNext are teaming up with Tampon Tuesday to ensure people experiencing homelessness and poverty have what they need.
“Can you imagine missing school or work or a social activity because you couldn’t afford menstrual hygiene products?” says Lindsay Rice, Director of Services and Community Development, YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin. “It is critical that these resources are available for women when and where they need them and Tampon Tuesday donations are the largest contribution of menstrual products that the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin receives.”
Throughout the Month of March, Tampon Tuesday events in London, St. Thomas and Belmont will engage communities in the conversation about health and dignity, and address the problem directly by collecting menstrual products for local agencies serving people in need. The events help restock shelves with these expensive and seldom-donated items. A Tampon Tuesday event will also be hosted in Strathroy in April.

The event in St. Thomas will be hosted at Railway City Brewery, with live music from the Hip Too. The brewery is bringing back a special beer for the event, created by Amanda Fehr and produced by a team of local female brewers for International Women’s Day in 2019.
All donations of product are delivered to local agencies for distribution to community members in need. The cost of admission to an event is one box of menstrual hygiene products.
Tampon Tuesday began eleven years ago when Mandi Fields, Community Relations, Bell Media, held the first event to help raise awareness of this little-known need. Since that time the event has grown into a national movement with United Way Centraide taking the event to local United Way’s across the country.
