Local Love in a Global Crisis Fund
Intended to address urgent and emerging community needs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for vulnerable populations and individuals and families living in poverty. Urgent needs may include (but are not limited to) access to food and other basic needs, crisis related supports including counselling and/or social connection programs.
Eligibility
To be eligible for funding, an organization must:
- Be registered with Canada Revenue Agency as a current registered charity;
- Be central to the provision of supports and services to meet community needs related to the COVID-19;
- Have reasonably explored all other COVID -19 related funding sources; and,
- Serve individuals and families living in Elgin Middlesex
United Way Elgin Middlesex will not fund the following:
- Organizations that are not registered charities;
- Organizations located outside Elgin Middlesex;
- For-profit organizations;
- Foundations;
- Unions;
- Professional Associations;
- Individuals;
- Hospitals and long-term-care facilities;
- Universities, colleges and school boards;
- Organizations whose purpose is solely related to political activity, as defined by the Canada Revenue Agency;
- Organizations without a clear demarcation between religious and community service; or,
- Organizations that could be deemed discriminatory, as defined by the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Funding parameters
- The availability of funding will vary, based on funds raised.
- The maximum amount of funding that can be requested is $20,000.
- This funding is for one-time requests and there is no guarantee of future funding beyond the initial grant.
- Funds may be used for immediate response and recovery costs including, but not limited to:

- Basic needs support for individuals and families;
- Physical distancing measures;
- Mental health supports for clients and staff;
- Programs and services that increase social connection for individuals and families;
- Technology infrastructure of service providers to allow continued operations and provide critical services;
- Programs, services and resources needed to innovatively provide support to those in need during and after the COVID-19 pandemic; or,
- Rebuilding and/or recovery efforts for the community and/or social services sector after COVID-19.
- A completed application must be submitted in the format provided to receive funds.
- United Way Elgin Middlesex will assess completed applications as they are received. Due to the immediacy of needs, applications will be assessed on an ongoing basis until funding is depleted.
- Depending on the number of applications received, United Way Elgin Middlesex may not be able to provide the full dollar amount requested or be able to fund every application.
- Depending on available funds, and the duration of the COVID-19 public health crisis, funding may be re-offered at a future date.
- For organizations applying for funding that are not current recipients of funding from United Way Elgin Middlesex, additional information could be requested to verify eligibility.
Funding Decision
If approved funding:
- The applicant will be informed via email, with required parameters for the funding and reporting requirements.
- Funds will be dispersed upon receipt of the electronically signed funding agreement, and based on the payment schedule as set out in the funding agreement.
- Funds may be disbursed via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). In this case, the applicant will be required to provide the necessary banking information for completion of the transfer.
- The organization will be required to complete the work by the date stated in the funding agreement, if determined.
- Reporting will be provided to United Way Elgin Middlesex by the date stated in the funding agreement. Funded agencies may be required to provide impact stories to United Way Elgin Middlesex.
If denied funding:
All applicants will be notified via email of the outcome of their grant applications. If funding is denied, no further action is required by the applicant. No funding appeals will be accepted for this grant program.
