Building a Healthier, More Connected Community

At United Way Elgin Middlesex’s Legacy and Leadership event, community leaders, long-standing donors and partners came together to celebrate the generosity that makes local change possible and reflect on the work still ahead. The evening was an opportunity to recognize the lasting impact of community investment, hear about the challenges facing people across London, Elgin and Middlesex, and explore how working together can create a stronger future for everyone.

Understanding the challenges facing our community

Dr. Alex Summers of the Middlesex London Public Health Unit shared data highlighting how public health is impacted by the many challenges affecting our region, from food insecurity and housing instability to mental health and opioid-related harms.

The presentation underscored an important truth: health is shaped by much more than access to medical care. Income, education, employment, housing, social support and freedom from discrimination all influence how likely people are to live healthy, fulfilling lives.

In the region, an estimated one in three households experiences food insecurity. Homelessness remains a significant concern, while the demand for community services continues to challenge the organizations working to meet people’s needs.

These challenges are interconnected. Addressing them requires looking beyond immediate needs to the underlying conditions that shape people’s lives.

As Dr. Summers emphasized, “the work communities do today to strengthen these foundations can improve outcomes for generations to come”.

Collaboration creates a path forward

Chuck Lazenby of the Unity Project and Scott Courtice of London Intercommunity Heath joined Dr. Summers for a panel discussion that brought these issues into focus, exploring what it will take to address complex community challenges and build solutions that last.

Panelists agreed that affordability remains a primary issue, and one that would reduce reliance on other services. They also discussed the need for different levels of government to work together, recognizing that many of the systemic changes required extend beyond municipal control.

While the challenges are significant, the conversation also offered reasons for hope.

Across our region, organizations are finding ways to work together, combining their expertise and resources to better support people navigating difficult circumstances. From connecting health services with supportive housing, to frontline teams coordinating care. Collaboration can be difficult, but the results are remarkable. No single organization can address these challenges alone. Lasting progress depends on each partner bringing their strengths to the table and working toward a common purpose.

Playing the long game

Creating lasting change means responding to immediate needs while investing in solutions that prevent those needs from growing in the future.

That requires sustained commitment, shared responsibility, and a willingness to address the root causes of poverty. It also means recognizing the value of community voices and working together to advocate for the changes people need.

For United Way Elgin Middlesex, this commitment is at the heart of building a community where everyone has a fair shot at a good life. Through the generosity of donors and the dedication of community partners, United Way helps support programs and services that address all of these issues.

These investments help people access support today while contributing to a stronger foundation for tomorrow.

A legacy that continues to make a difference

Legacy and Leadership is a reminder that meaningful community change is built over time. The generosity of long-standing supporters has helped create opportunities, strengthen local services and bring people together around a shared vision for our region.

United Way Elgin Middlesex is grateful to everyone who continues to invest in this work, and to the community leaders and organizations who turn that commitment into action every day.

The challenges facing our community are complex, but our shared purpose remains clear: a community where everyone can belong, thrive and build a good life.

Together, we can keep making that future possible.
