You need that to be able to start building your life back again. Especially from sometimes ground zero, where you’ve lost everything.”
Finding Home Again: Lynda’s Story
There was a time when Lynda was trying to navigate loss, uncertainty, and the feeling that the ground beneath her life had suddenly shifted.
After losing her husband, Lynda returned to the area to be closer to her children and grandchildren. During a period of housing instability, she found herself staying in a shelter and moving from couch to couch while trying to determine what came next.
Then she found support through the YWCA, a United Way Elgin Middlesex funded program. What began as a search for housing became something much larger. Along with a safe place to stay, Lynda was connected to employment services, counselling support, and resources focused on her overall well-being.
For Lynda, having stable housing meant more than simply having a roof over her head.
“You need that to be able to start building your life back again,” she shared. “Especially from sometimes ground zero, where you’ve lost everything.”
That foundation became the first step toward rebuilding.
Today, life looks different. Lynda has found stability, secured employment, and continues to give back through volunteer work in the community.
“Everything is definitely moving in the right direction,” she said.
Through the program, she found more than resources. She found friendships, mentorship, and a renewed sense of hope for what the future can hold.
Lynda also recognizes that many others in our community are facing challenges of their own. Rising housing costs, economic pressures, and personal hardships continue to leave many people searching for support.
“There’s a lot of need for programs like this,” she explained. “It’s so important that these resources are here for people.”
Through the support of donors, volunteers, and community partners, United Way Elgin Middlesex helps make stories like Lynda’s possible.
Today, Lynda has something she once feared she had lost: a place to call home and the opportunity to keep moving forward.
- Last year, United Way funded programs that helped 807 people on the journey to safe, stable housing
- 17,016 shelter nights were provided for people who have not yet been able to move into stable housing
- 210 people moved into stable housing, and 344 more received support to maintain it
